12th - 16th June 2008 - Minke Whale Expedition

Written by Trip Director - James Hutchinson

Being the first official minke whale trip of 2008 everybody had high hopes of a close encounter with these wonderful creatures. Everyone got more than they ever dreamed of with minke whales showing up to say "hello" at almost every dive site. Our best encounter occurred at Lighthouse Bommie with all guests enjoying a whale or 2 approaching to within a few metres.
As well as the numerous minke whale encounters, we also had lots of great dives along the ribbon reefs. Sites visited included: Steve's Bommie, Challenger Bay and the world famous Cod Hole. At these sites all the divers enjoyed such marine creatures as turtles, sea snakes, leafy scorpionfish, schooling trevally, barracuda, white tip reef sharks and the amazing potato cod.
The end of the trip was celebrated with the entertaining party night and Aussie BBQ.

16th - 19th June 2008 - Minke Whale Expedition

Written by Trip Director - James Hutchinson

After arriving at Lizard Island our guests were eager to get aboard and start their diving expedition. Motoring directly to the Cod Hole, everybody was keen to jump into the water to spend some quality time with the ever friendly potato cod, white tip reef sharks, hairy ghost pipefish and our resident pymy seahorses. Heading down to the bottom of ribbon reef no.10, the minke whale sightings began almost immediately although the best encounter was the following day at Lighthouse Bommie where all the guests enjoyed up to 5 minke whales passing snorkellers and divers alike at distances of as little as 2-3 metres.
Topping this off with a few more dives at such place as Steve's Bommie and picturesque Flare Point, everybody onboard had a wonderful time.
